Answer to Your Question
Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,
Dear sister, may Allah bless you for your sincere concern about maintaining your Deen and modesty. Your question touches on several important matters. Let me address them one by one with authentic Islamic guidance.
1. The Virtue of Your Current Position
First and foremost, know that staying at home, maintaining your modesty, and fulfilling your role as a righteous wife is a great act of worship in Islam. The Prophet īˇē said:
"The woman is the guardian of her husband's home and she will be questioned about her responsibility." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 893)
Imam Ibn Abidin (may Allah have mercy on him) writes in Radd al-Muhtar (vol. 6, p. 371) that the primary role of a woman is to remain in her home and manage the household, as this is what preserves her dignity and protects her from fitnah.
Allah says in the Qur'an:
"And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like the displaying of the times of ignorance." (Surah al-Ahzab, 33:33)
Your desire to maintain proper hijab and avoid non-mahram interaction is commendable and is exactly what Allah and His Messenger īˇē have commanded.
2. Regarding Facebook and YouTube Monetization
The general ruling on earning through Facebook and YouTube monetization is that it is permissible in principle, but with strict conditions:
- The content must be completely halal - no music, no inappropriate images, no free-mixing, no revealing clothing, no jokes that violate Shariah
- The content must be beneficial - Islamic lectures, educational content, beneficial skills, etc.
- No interaction with non-mahram men - even in comments or messages, as this can lead to fitnah
- The platform itself must not be primarily used for haram purposes
However, in your specific situation, there are serious concerns:
- Imam al-Haskafi and Ibn Abidin (Radd al-Muhtar, vol. 9, p. 548) emphasize that any means that leads to fitnah (temptation) becomes impermissible, even if the original act is permissible
- The reality of social media is that it is extremely difficult to maintain proper hijab and avoid fitnah while managing a public page or channel
- Your husband has explicitly forbidden this, and obeying your husband in matters that are not sinful is obligatory upon you
The Prophet īˇē said:
"If a woman prays her five prayers, fasts her month of Ramadan, guards her chastity, and obeys her husband, she will enter Paradise through any gate she wishes." (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 16641)
3. Your Fear About the Future
Your concern about what would happen if something happened to your husband is understandable. However, consider the following:
-
Tawakkul (Trust in Allah): Allah says:
"And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect." (Surah at-Talaq, 65:2-3)
-
Your education is not wasted: You have an M.Sc in CSE. This knowledge is valuable and can be used if ever needed. You can:
- Teach other women (in person, maintaining hijab)
- Develop skills that can be used in women-only environments
- Keep your knowledge fresh by studying and learning at home
-
Allah is the Provider: Your husband's job is not the actual provider - Allah is. If your husband were to pass away, Allah would provide for you through other means, and your skills would be there when needed.
Mufti Muhammad Shafi (may Allah have mercy on him) writes in Ma'ariful Quran (vol. 7, p. 214) that Allah's provision is guaranteed for every soul, and we should not compromise our Deen out of fear of poverty.
4. What Should You Do?
Based on the principles of the Hanafi school and the guidance of our scholars, I advise you as follows:
A. Obey Your Husband
Your husband has set conditions that are in line with Islamic values. Obeying him in this matter is obligatory upon you as long as his commands do not contradict Shariah. In fact, his commands here are protecting your Deen.
B. Focus on Your Home and Family
Make your home a source of barakah. The Prophet īˇē said:
"The best of you are those who are best to their families." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3895)
C. Develop Skills That Don't Require Free-Mixing
You can:
- Study Islamic knowledge (Fiqh, Tafsir, Hadith) at home
- Learn skills that can be used in women-only environments
- Teach other women in your community (with proper hijab)
- Write Islamic content (books, articles) under a pen name without interacting with non-mahram men
D. Practice Contentment (Qana'ah)
The Prophet īˇē said:
"Richness is not having many possessions, but true richness is the richness of the soul." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6446)
E. Make Dua and Increase Your Ibadah
Your current situation is a great opportunity to increase your worship, memorize Qur'an, and learn your Deen properly. This is a blessing that many women do not have.
5. Regarding Your Financial Concerns
If you feel there is financial strain, consider:
- Discuss openly with your husband about budgeting and savings
- Practice simplicity - the Prophet īˇē lived a simple life, and simplicity is a sign of faith
- Make dua for barakah in your income - the Prophet īˇē taught us to pray for barakah in provision
6. A Special Note
Your situation is actually a great blessing. Many women wish they could stay at home and focus on their Deen. You have:
- A husband who wants you to maintain hijab
- Financial provision (even if not luxurious)
- The opportunity to focus on your spiritual growth
Do not let the society around you make you feel that staying at home is a waste. In the sight of Allah, your role as a righteous wife and mother is far greater than any career.
Summary of Rulings
| Issue | Ruling | |-------|--------| | Working outside the home | Not permissible without necessity, especially when husband forbids | | Remote work/business | Permissible in principle, but not in your case due to fitnah concerns | | Facebook/YouTube monetization | Permissible only with strict conditions; not advisable in your situation | | Obeying husband's prohibition | Obligatory, as his command aligns with Shariah | | Staying at home | A virtue and act of worship |
