Is following or liking a page that promotes shirk/kufr out of ignorance a cause of kufr?

Answer
Answer (Hanafi Fiqh)
Wa ʿalaykum al-salām wa raḥmatullāh wa barakātuh.
Short answer
No — you are not a kāfir or mushrik. Your situation falls under the category of kufr without knowledge (kufr jahlī) that was not accompanied by intention or belief in kufr, and you have now repented. In the Hanafi school, a person is not declared a kāfir merely for an act that outwardly resembles kufr when the person did not intend kufr and did not know it was kufr. Repentance (tawbah) removes the sin, and your īmān remains intact — indeed you are still a Muslim.
Detailed explanation
1. The principle: kufr requires knowledge and intent
The foundational Hanafi principle is stated by Imam Ibn ʿĀbidīn in Radd al-Muḥtār (Kitāb al-Jihād, bāb al-murtadd):
«لَا يَكْفُرُ بِمَا لَا يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ كُفْرٌ، وَلَا يَعْتَقِدُهُ»
Translation: "He does not become a kāfir by [doing] something he does not know to be kufr, nor believes [it to be kufr]."
And in Radd al-Muḥtār (Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, bāb mā yufsid al-ṣalāh / and Kitāb al-Jihād):
«الْكُفْرُ لَا يَكُونُ إِلَّا بِاعْتِقَادٍ أَوْ إِنْكَارٍ أَوْ اسْتِهْزَاءٍ»
Translation: "Kufr only occurs through belief, denial, or mockery."
Imam al-Ṭaḥāwī in al-ʿAqīdah al-Ṭaḥāwiyyah states:
«وَلَا نُكَفِّرُ أَحَدًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْقِبْلَةِ بِذَنْبٍ مَا لَمْ يَسْتَحِلَّهُ»
Translation: "We do not declare anyone of the people of the Qiblah a kāfir for a sin, as long as he does not consider it lawful."
You did not believe the shirk/kufr was true; you thought those ideologies were "normal" and not kufr. That is jahl (ignorance), not iʿtiqād (belief). Once you learned the truth, you repented. This is precisely the case of one who commits kufr out of ignorance — he is not judged a kāfir.
2. The ḥadīth on the man who erred out of ignorance
The Prophet ﷺ said regarding the man who, out of extreme fear, said words that amounted to kufr:
«إِنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ: يَا رَبِّ، لَوْ أَنَّكَ أَخْرَجْتَنِي مِنْهَا لَمْ أَعُدْ... فَقَالَ اللَّهُ: قَدْ أَخْرَجْتُكَ مِنْهَا فَلَا تَعُدْ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Tawbah)
The scholars (including Imam al-Nawawī in Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim) explain that this man did not become a kāfir because he did not intend kufr — his words were out of overwhelming fear and ignorance, not belief. This is the ʿudhr bil-jahl (excuse of ignorance) principle.
3. Following/liking a page is not itself kufr
Mere following a page, or liking a post, is an outward action. It does not constitute iʿtiqād (belief) in the content. The Hanafi jurists distinguish between:
- Actions of the limbs (aʿmāl al-jawāriḥ) — these are sins at most, not kufr, unless accompanied by belief.
- Actions of the heart (aʿmāl al-qalb) — belief, denial, mockery — these are what constitute kufr.
Imam Ibn ʿĀbidīn (Radd al-Muḥtār, Kitāb al-Jihād) and Muftī Muḥammad Shafīʿ (Maʿārif al-Qurʾān, under Sūrah al-Nisāʾ 4:140) both clarify that merely sitting in a gathering of kufr or being present where kufr is spoken does not make one a kāfir, provided one does not believe or approve of the kufr in one's heart. The verse:
«وَقَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتَابِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ»
(Sūrah al-Nisāʾ 4:140)
is understood by the Ḥanafī jurists as a prohibition (a sin) — not a declaration of kufr — for the one who sits without approving.
4. Your repentance is accepted
Allah says:
«قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا»
(Sūrah al-Zumar 39:53)
And:
«وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ»
(Sūrah al-Shūrā 42:25)
Imam Ashraf ʿAlī Thānwī in Bahishtī Zewar (Part 1, "Tawbah") writes: "When a person repents sincerely from kufr or shirk, his tawbah is accepted, and he returns to being a Muslim — indeed he is a Muslim, and his previous ignorance is forgiven."
5. Practical guidance
- Do not doubt your īmān. You are a Muslim. The waswās (whisperings) of Shayṭān that you are a kāfir are from Shayṭān — reject them. The Prophet ﷺ said: «ذَاكَ صَرِيحُ الْإِيمَانِ» — "That [rejecting the whisper] is pure faith" (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim).
- You are not obligated to delete the fake account if you cannot access it. You have done what you could. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity (Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:286).
- Make tawbah with the three conditions: (a) cease the sin, (b) regret it, (c) resolve never to return to it. Since you cannot access the account, your inability is excused.
- Renew your īmān as a precaution and for peace of mind: recite the Kalimah and make duʿāʾ. This is mustaḥabb, not because you were a kāfir, but to strengthen īmān.
- Avoid such pages in future — this is the practical lesson.
