Halal and Haram · Hanafi

Answer
Answer (English):
Wa Alaikum Assalaam wa Rahmatullahi Barakatuhu.
In the Hanafi school, creating, displaying, or using images of living beings (humans and animals) is strictly prohibited (haram). This includes photographs, hand-drawn pictures, digital graphics, and even AI‑generated images that depict a complete human face or body.
The ruling applies regardless of whether the image is for a commercial purpose (like a Fiverr gig banner) or personal use. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture” (Sahih al‑Bukhari, Hadith 3226; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2106).
And: “The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: ‘Give life to what you have created!’” (Sahih al‑Bukhari, Hadith 5961).
Imam Ibn ‘Abidin (radiallahu anhu) writes in Radd al‑Muhtar under Kitab al‑Karahiyah:
“The prohibition of making images of living beings is established by the consensus (ijma‘) of the Companions and the Imams. It is the same whether the image is drawn, carved, woven, or produced by any other means.” (Radd al‑Muhtar, 1:647)
Mufti Muhammad Shafi‘ (rahimahullah) states in Imdad al‑Fatawa (4:305) that photography of animate beings is also included in this prohibition because it produces a likeness of the human form.
AI‑generated images of women are no exception. Even though the image is not a photograph of a real person, it still depicts a human female and falls under the general prohibition.
Practical advice:
- For your Fiverr gig banner, use calligraphy, geometric patterns, or images of inanimate objects (nature scenes, books, stationery, etc.).
- If you need a human illustration for a specific client request, explain to them that Islamic guidelines prevent you from using animate images. Most clients will respect your religious commitment.
May Allah grant you success in your freelancing journey while keeping you within the boundaries of halal.
