Protecting One’s Husband from Adultery in This Age: A Hanafi Guide
In the present era, where immorality and temptation abound, protecting one’s husband (shāmī) from falling into sin is a shared responsibility of both spouses. Islam provides clear guidance and spiritual practices to safeguard chastity and strengthen marital bonds. Below are practical and spiritual measures based on the Qur’an, Sunnah, and esteemed Hanafi works such as Radd al-Muhtar, Fatawa Usmani, Ma’ariful Quran, and Bahishti Zewar.
1. Strengthen the Foundation of Taqwā (God-Consciousness)
The most effective shield against sin is sincere fear of Allah. Allah says:
“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.” (Qur’an 49:13)
- Encourage your husband to pray the five daily prayers on time, especially Fajr and Isha in congregation (if possible).
- Recite daily du‘ās for protection:
“Rabbi innī limā anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqīr” (Qur’an 28:24) – “My Lord, indeed I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.” - Read Sūrat al-Nūr (24) regularly, as it contains verses on guarding chastity and lowering the gaze.
2. Lowering the Gaze – The First Line of Defense
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The glance is a poisoned arrow of Shayṭān. Whoever lowers his gaze for fear of Allah, Allah will grant him the sweetness of faith.” (Al-Mustadrak, Sahih)
- Both spouses should consciously avoid looking at non-mahram individuals in person, online, or on social media.
- Advise your husband to delete or unfollow any accounts that display immodest images.
- Practice ‘ghadd al-basar’ (lowering the gaze) even in unavoidable situations, and make du‘ā: “Allahumma innī as’aluka ‘afwaka wa ‘āfiyataka fī dīnī wa dunyāyā…”
3. Fasting to Control Desires
The Prophet ﷺ said: “O young men, whoever among you can afford to marry, let him marry, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity. And whoever cannot afford it, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
- Encourage your husband to fast on Mondays and Thursdays, or at least three days every month (Ayyām al-Bīḍ).
- Fasting weakens carnal desires and strengthens self-control.
4. Creating a Peaceful Home Environment
A husband who feels emotionally and physically satisfied at home is less tempted by external allure.
- Dress attractively for him within the home, as advised by the scholars.
- Speak kindly and avoid nagging. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best to my family.” (Tirmidhi)
- Pray together and recite Sūrat al-Baqarah in the house – it keeps shayṭān away (Muslim).
5. Specific Du‘ās and Amal for Protection
- Recite the following du‘ā every morning and evening:
“Bismillāh alladhī lā yaḍurru ma‘a ismihi shay’un fī l-arḍi wa lā fī s-samā’i wa huwa s-samī‘u l-‘alīm.” (Abu Dawud) – Protection from all harm. - Read Āyat al-Kursī (2:255) after every obligatory prayer.
- Recite Sūrat al-Falaq and Sūrat al-Nās three times each in the morning and evening.
- Make du‘ā for your husband in prostration (sajdah): “Rabbanā hab lanā min azwājinā wa dhurriyyātinā qurrata a‘yun…” (Qur’an 25:74)
6. Keeping Away from Triggers
- Avoid unnecessary outings, mixed gatherings, and free-mixing environments.
- Limit exposure to movies, dramas, and social media that promote illicit relationships.
- The Hanafi jurists (Radd al-Muhtar, 1/406) emphasize that a man should not sit alone with a non-mahram woman (khalwah), and that includes digital privacy (e.g., private chatting).
7. Mutual Reminders and Accountability
- Gently remind your husband about the gravity of adultery in Islam: it is a major sin (kabīrah) that destroys families and incurs severe punishment.
- Set a daily or weekly time to read Islamic books together, such as Bahishti Zewar (chapters on marriage and modesty).
- If you notice any early signs of weakness, speak privately and lovingly, and seek counsel from a trustworthy scholar.
8. Seeking Allah’s Help Through Patience and Prayer
Allah says:
“And seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is difficult except for the humble.” (Qur’an 2:45)
Both spouses should pray Tahajjud (night prayer) and supplicate for protection. The Prophet ﷺ said: “A du‘ā made in the middle of the night is accepted.” (Bukhari)
Conclusion:
Protecting your husband in this age is possible through a combination of sincere faith, practical measures, and consistent du‘ā. Strengthen your own relationship, create a loving atmosphere, and turn to Allah with humility. As Imam Ibn ‘Abidin states in Radd al-Muhtar: “The preservation of faith and chastity is the foundation of all good.”
May Allah protect all believing men and women from the evils of adultery and grant them purity of heart and action. Āmīn.
