Question

Answer

Answer (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم)

Wa ‘Alaikumus Salaam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu.

May Allah grant your deceased relative high ranks in Jannah and give you patience. Dreams can be a means of inspiration, a reflection of one’s thoughts, or a warning from Shaytan. In authentic Islamic teachings, the dream of a deceased person is often considered true if it is clear and the deceased appears in a good state. However, the sudden transformation from life to death in a dream requires careful interpretation.

Islamic Rulings on Dreams of the Deceased

  1. General Principle – The Prophet ﷺ said: “When the time draws near, the dream of a believer will hardly be false” (Bukhārī, Muslim). Dreams of deceased believers can be a means of conveying their condition in the Barzakh (intermediate realm).

  2. Hanafi Scholars’ View – Ibn ‘Ābidīn (Radd al-Muhtār) and other Hanafi fuqaha’ state that if a deceased person appears in a dream, the dream is true if the deceased gives good news or seems happy, and it is a reminder for the living to pray for them.

  3. Interpretation of Your Dream

    • Initially seeing your relative alive, healthy, talking and smiling indicates that he is in a state of ease and Allah’s mercy is upon him. This is a positive sign, especially since he was ill in life.
    • The sudden change (eyes turning white, all crying, reciting Kalimah and du‘a) could symbolize the need for continuing prayers and charity for him. It may also be a reminder to you that death is certain and that you should prepare for the Hereafter.
    • Some Hanafi dream interpreters have said that if a deceased person appears and then “dies” again in the dream, it may mean that the dreamer should increase good deeds on behalf of the deceased or that the deceased’s soul is in need of forgiveness. It is not necessarily a bad omen; rather, it is a call to action.
  4. Practical Advice

    • Give sadaqah (charity) on behalf of your relative.
    • Recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah, Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ (three times), and du‘ā for forgiveness (e.g., “Allāhumma ighfir li-hayyinā wa mayyitinā…”).
    • Perform ‘Ishāl al-Thawāb (transfer of reward) by reciting Qur’an and making du‘ā for him.
    • Do not panic from such dreams. They are often a reflection of your own concern and love for the deceased.

Relevant References from Hanafi Works

  • Imdād al-Fatāwā (Mufti Muhammad Shafi‘): “If the deceased appears happy and healthy in a dream, it indicates that he is in comfort. If he appears sad or in distress, then the living must pray and give charity for him.”
  • Fatāwā Usmānī (Mufti Taqi ‘Usmānī): “Seeing a deceased person alive and smiling is a good sign. If the scene turns to death, it may be a reminder to the dreamer to not be heedless of the Hereafter.”
  • Radd al-Muhtār (Ibn ‘Ābidīn): “The soul may appear in a dream to inform about its state. The living should respond by increasing good deeds for the deceased.”

Conclusion

Your dream is a positive reminder that your relative is in Allah’s mercy (as indicated by his healthy, smiling appearance) and that you should continue supplicating for him. The latter part of the dream does not predict anything negative; it simply urges you to keep him in your prayers. Make du‘ā, give sadaqah, and trust in Allah’s infinite mercy.

And Allah knows best.
