Answer

Answer: How to Place Trust in Allah and Make Du‘ā After a Miscarriage

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

First and foremost, we express our deepest sympathy for your loss. May Allah grant you patience and reward you for your suffering. A miscarriage at five months is a profound trial, and your feelings of devastation are natural. Islam provides clear guidance on how to deal with such calamities and how to turn to Allah in du‘ā.

1. Understand the Reality of Qadr (Divine Decree)

Allah says:

مَا أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَمَن يُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُ “No calamity befalls except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah, He will guide his heart.”
(Surah At-Taghabun 64:11)

The scholars explain that the one who truly believes in Allah’s decree will have his heart guided to patience and acceptance. This is the first step in placing your trust in Allah (tawakkul).

Your miscarried baby, if it had a soul (which is breathed after 120 days according to authentic hadith), will intercede for you on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Any Muslim woman who loses three of her children (before puberty) will be shielded from the Fire by them.”
A woman asked: “What about two?” He said: “Even two.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)

So be assured that your child is a source of reward for you, if you remain patient.

2. The Correct Way to Make Du‘ā

Your question about whether to ask for “four babies” or “whatever is best” is answered by the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to ask Allah for good in this world and the Hereafter, and to be specific in our requests while also submitting to Allah’s wisdom.

a) Ask with Certainty and Specificity

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“When one of you makes du‘ā, let him be firm in his request, and let him not say: ‘O Allah, give me if You will.’ For indeed, no one can compel Allah.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)

So you should ask Allah for exactly what you desire, such as: “O Allah, grant me righteous children who will be a comfort to my eyes.” You may ask for four, or ten, as long as you are sincere. The key is to be confident that Allah is able to answer.

b) Combine Request with Submission to Allah’s Wisdom

The comprehensive du‘ā taught by the Prophet ﷺ includes both asking for good and acknowledging that true good is known only to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ used to say:

“اللهم اصرف عني شر ما قضيت، واقدر لي الخير حيث كان، ثم أرضني به” “O Allah, turn away from me the evil of what You have decreed, and decree for me good wherever it is, then make me pleased with it.”
(Ahmad, Hasan)

Also, the du‘ā of al-Khidr (or more precisely the du‘ā taught in the Qur’an):

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ “Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:201)

This covers all good, including righteous offspring.

c) The Best Wording for Your Situation

Combine the two approaches: be specific in your request, and then submit to Allah’s choice. For example, say:

“اللهم إن كنت تعلم أن هذا الحمل خير لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري، فاقدره لي، وإن كان شراً لي فاصرفه عني وارضني بقضائك.”
“O Allah, if You know that this pregnancy (or child) is good for my religion, my livelihood, and my final end, then decree it for me. And if it is bad for me, then turn it away from me and make me pleased with Your decree.”

But do not doubt Allah’s mercy. You can also simply say:

“اللهم ارزقني أولاداً صالحين أقر بهم عيني، واجعلهم من عبادك الصالحين، وأبعد عني ما يضرني في ديني ودنياي.”

3. Practical Steps to Increase Tawakkul

  • Increase Istighfar (seeking forgiveness): The Prophet ﷺ said that frequent istighfar brings children and wealth (see Surah Nuh 71:10-12).
  • Make du‘ā in the last third of the night: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven and says: ‘Who is asking Me, that I may give him? Who is seeking forgiveness, that I may forgive him?’” (Bukhari).
  • Recite the Qur’an and make du‘ā during sujūd (prostration): The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so increase your supplication there.
  • Be patient and avoid complaining: Patience is half of faith. Resort to Allah with tears, but do not question His wisdom.

4. Important Advice from the Salaf

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

“The servant’s reliance on Allah (tawakkul) is that he trusts Allah to take care of his affairs, relying on Him alone, while doing the permissible means that Allah has commanded. And he knows that whatever Allah wills happens, and whatever He does not will does not happen.”

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) advised those who have lost a child:

“You should know that this child will be a treasure for you in Paradise. And the mother will be rewarded for her patience. So do not say: ‘Why did this happen?’ Rather say: ‘We belong to Allah and to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me better than it.’”

Summary

  • Trust in Allah by accepting His decree and believing that He chooses what is best for you, even if you do not understand it.
  • Make du‘ā with certainty – ask for the number of children you desire, but also ask for what is good for your religion and worldly life.
  • Submit to Allah’s choice after making du‘ā, and be pleased with whatever He grants.
  • Increase in worship, istighfar, and patience. Your miscarriage is not a punishment; it is a trial that can elevate your rank.

May Allah grant you righteous children who will be a delight to your eyes, and may He heal your heart and fill it with contentment. Āmīn.
