Question

"Assalamu alaikum. I have a question related to my daughter's menstruation. She is 10 years and 10 months old. She had her first period this year in Ramadan 2026. At first, her periods were long, lasting 10 to 15 days each month. But now, for the last 3 months, her pattern has been changing. She had her period from August 18th to 27th, then again from September 4th to 10th, then from September 19th to 24th, and now again on October 4th, which is continuing. Please guide me on whether she has to pray or not, and what her normal cycle of menstruation is.

Answer

Answer Walaikumus salam

Since your daughter’s previous menstrual period (ḥayḍ) ended on September 24, and an important ruling in Islamic law is that there must be a minimum of 15 days of purity (ṭuhr) between two menstrual periods, the bleeding that started on October 4 cannot be considered ḥayḍ under any circumstances.

Rather, this bleeding is istiḥāḍah (irregular bleeding). Therefore, she must continue to perform her prayers during this period.

However, if she experiences bleeding on or after October 10, and the bleeding continues for at least three days and three nights, then it will be considered ḥayḍ. During that time, she should refrain from performing Ṣalāh, reciting the Qur’an, and other acts from which a woman in ḥayḍ is required to refrain.
