Answer

Is Sharing a Bed Permissible in Islam?

Introduction

The general principle in Islamic law is that actions are judged by their underlying purposes and consequences, and the default ruling for customs and daily habits is permissibility (ibāḥah) unless a specific text prohibits them. Sleeping arrangements fall under this category. The Sharī'ah is concerned with preserving modesty, avoiding temptation (fitnah), and maintaining proper boundaries between the sexes.

Allāh says:

"And Allāh has made for you your homes as a place of rest."
Sūrah an-Naḥl 16:80

And He says:

"And among His signs is the night, that you may rest therein."
Sūrah Yūnus 10:67

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Allāh loves that His concessions be taken, just as He dislikes that His disobedience be committed."
— Reported by Aḥmad and al-Bayhaqī; graded ḥasan by al-Albānī in Irwā' al-Ghalīl (no. 564)

1. Mother and Adult Daughter Sleeping on the Same Bed

Ruling: Permissible (Jā'iz).

There is no prohibition in the Qur'ān or authentic Sunnah against a mother and her adult daughter sharing a bed. They are maḥārim (close relatives to whom marriage is permanently forbidden), and there is no fitnah (temptation) between them.

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (raḥimahullāh) stated in Majmū' al-Fatāwā (15/378):

"The basic principle concerning things is permissibility, and nothing is prohibited except what Allāh and His Messenger have prohibited."

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymīn (raḥimahullāh) said in Fatāwā Nūr 'alā al-Darb:

"A woman sleeping with her mother or her sister or her female relatives is permissible, and there is no harm in it, because they are maḥārim and there is no fear of fitnah."

However, if there is any concern of immorality (fāḥishah) — which is unthinkable between a mother and daughter — then it would be prohibited. But the default is permissibility.

2. Two or More Women Sleeping Together on the Same Bed (During Travel or Limited Space)

Ruling: Permissible (Jā'iz).

This is explicitly established from the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions used to travel, and the wives of the Prophet ﷺ would share spaces.

Evidence from the Sunnah:

'A'ishah (raḍiyallāhu 'anhā) narrated:

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ سَفَرًا أَقْرَعَ بَيْنَ نِسَائِهِ
"When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ wanted to go on a journey, he would draw lots among his wives."
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (no. 2593) and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (no. 2770)

This shows that on journeys, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ would accompany him, and they would share tents and sleeping spaces. There is no report of prohibition against women sleeping together.

Shaykh Ibn Bāz (raḥimahullāh) was asked about women sleeping together in one bed and replied:

"There is no harm in women sleeping together in one bed if there is no fear of fitnah, because the basic principle is permissibility."
Fatāwā Ibn Bāz (28/315)

Important condition: If there is any fear of fitnah (temptation) or immoral behavior — which is extremely rare and unnatural — then it becomes prohibited. But the default ruling is permissibility.

3. Adult Mother, Daughter, and Son Sleeping Together on the Same Bed

Ruling: Prohibited (Ḥarām) if the son has reached the age of discernment (mumayyiz) or puberty.

This is where the ruling changes. The Prophet ﷺ commanded the separation of children in their beds:

مُرُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ سَبْعِ سِنِينَ، وَاضْرِبُوهُمْ عَلَيْهَا وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ عَشْرٍ، وَفَرِّقُوا بَيْنَهُمْ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ
"Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and beat them for it when they are ten, and separate them in their beds."
— Reported by Abū Dāwūd (no. 495); graded ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī in Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

لَا يَخْلُوَنَّ رَجُلٌ بِامْرَأَةٍ إِلَّا وَمَعَهَا ذُو مَحْرَمٍ
"No man should be alone with a woman unless she has a maḥram with her."
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (no. 5233) and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (no. 1341)

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymīn (raḥimahullāh) said:

"It is not permissible for a man to sleep in the same bed as his mother or sister if he has reached the age of discernment, because this leads to fitnah and exposes him to temptation. The Prophet ﷺ commanded separating children in their beds at the age of ten."
Fatāwā Nūr 'alā al-Darb

Shaykh al-Fawzān (ḥafidhahullāh) stated:

"A man sleeping in the same bed as his mother or sister after reaching puberty is not permissible, because it involves uncovering of the 'awrah and exposure to fitnah. The Sharī'ah has blocked the means to evil."
al-Muntaqā min Fatāwā al-Fawzān

Therefore: If the son is a child below the age of discernment (under 7), it may be permissible. If he is 7 or older, it is not permissible for him to sleep in the same bed as his mother or adult sister. If he is 10 or older, it is definitely prohibited, and they must be separated.

4. Two or More Adult Men Sleeping Together on the Same Bed

Ruling: Permissible (Jā'iz) with conditions.

The basic principle is permissibility. The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions used to sleep in the same space during travel.

Evidence:

Ibn 'Umar (raḍiyallāhu 'anhumā) narrated:

"We were with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ on a journey, and we used to sleep in the mosque..."
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (no. 462)

The Companions would sleep in close proximity during battles and journeys. There is no prohibition against men sharing a bed.

However, there are conditions:

  1. No fear of fitnah — If there is any fear of immoral behavior (which is prohibited in Islam), then it becomes ḥarām.
  2. Covering the 'awrah — The 'awrah of a man is from the navel to the knee. They must not expose their 'awrah to one another.
  3. No improper touching — Any sexual contact between men is liwāṭ (sodomy), which is a major sin.

Shaykh Ibn Bāz (raḥimahullāh) said:

"There is no harm in men sleeping together in one bed if there is no fear of fitnah, but if there is fear of fitnah or evil, then it is not permissible."
Fatāwā Ibn Bāz (28/316)

Shaykh al-Albānī (raḥimahullāh) said:

"The basic principle is permissibility, and the Prophet ﷺ did not prohibit men from sleeping together. However, if there is fear of fitnah, then it is prohibited."
Silsilat al-Hudā wa al-Nūr (no. 245)

Summary Table

| Scenario | Ruling | |----------|--------| | Mother and adult daughter | Permissible | | Two or more women | Permissible (if no fitnah) | | Mother, daughter, and adult son (7+) | Prohibited | | Mother, daughter, and son (under 7) | Permissible | | Two or more adult men | Permissible (if no fitnah, 'awrah covered) |

Important Principles

  1. The default ruling is permissibility — Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah said: "The basic principle concerning things is permissibility." (Majmū' al-Fatāwā, 15/378)

  2. Blocking the means to evil (Sadd al-Dharā'i') — Imām Ibn al-Qayyim said: "The Sharī'ah blocks the means to evil, so anything that leads to ḥarām is itself ḥarām." (I'lām al-Muwaqqi'īn, 3/147)

  3. Separation of children — The ḥadīth of Abū Dāwūd (no. 495) commands separating children in their beds at age 10.

  4. Fear of fitnah — If there is any genuine fear of temptation or immorality, the ruling changes to prohibition.

Conclusion

  1. Mother and adult daughter — Permissible.
  2. Two or more women — Permissible, especially during travel or limited space.
  3. Mother, daughter, and adult sonProhibited if the son is 7 or older; permissible if under 7.
  4. Two or more adult men — Permissible with conditions (no fitnah, 'awrah covered).

And Allāh knows best.
