Question Summary

The questioner says: "A person subjected me to mental torture, and as a result my menstrual period stopped. Previously my period lasted 3–4 days, but after the mental distress it stopped after only 2 days. That person later admitted and said, 'I caused your period to stop.' What should one do when someone commits such a shameless act?"

Islamic Ruling

1. The Act of Oppression (Ẓulm) is Absolutely Forbidden

In Islam, causing physical or mental torture to another person is a major sin. The Qur’an explicitly prohibits oppression:

"And do not oppress; indeed, Allah does not like oppressors."
(Sūrah al-Qaṣaṣ 28:77)

"Whoever does a wrong (ẓulm), We will make him taste a great punishment."
(Sūrah al-Furqān 25:19)

The ḥadīth of the Prophet ﷺ states:

"Beware of oppression, for oppression will be layers of darkness on the Day of Resurrection."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, no. 2578)

The person who admits to having “stopped your period” through psychological torture is committing a grave sin. Even if the claim is false or exaggerated, the act of admitting to causing harm is itself a confession of wrongdoing.

2. Can a Human Being Really Control Another’s Menstruation?

Menstruation is a natural biological process governed by Allāh’s decree and physical factors such as stress, hormonal changes, illness, or psychological trauma. It is not within the power of any human being to directly stop or start it except by Allāh’s permission (e.g., through natural causes or, in extremely rare cases, through black magic/siḥr).

  • If the person used black magic (siḥr) – Islam considers siḥr a major sin and an act of kufr (disbelief) if practiced deliberately. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Avoid the seven destructive sins… associating partners with Allah, witchcraft (siḥr)…” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, no. 2766). In Ḥanafī fiqh, the ruling is that practicing or believing in siḥr is disbelief (Radd al-Muḥtār, 6/396). If the person used siḥr to harm you, they must repent sincerely, and you should seek protection through ruqyah (Qur’ānic recitation) and du‘ā’.

  • If the person merely claimed credit for a natural effect (e.g., the stress they caused triggered your period to stop) – then they are lying and exaggerating their power. Their statement “I stopped your period” is false, but the sin of oppression remains because they inflicted mental torture.

3. What You Should Do Now

a. For Yourself

  • Turn to Allah with sincere repentance – even if you did nothing wrong, ask Allah to remove the effects of the oppression and grant you health.
  • Perform ruqyah – recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah, Āyat al-Kursī (Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:255), Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, and an-Nās over yourself (blow on your hands and wipe your body). These are the strongest protections against harm.
  • Increase in ṣalāh and du‘ā’ – especially the morning and evening adhkār. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to say:

"Bismillāh alladhī lā yaḍurru ma‘a ismihi shay’un fī al-arḍi wa lā fī as-samā’i wa huwa as-samī‘u al-‘alīm"
(In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing can harm on the earth or in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.) – Sunan Abī Dāwūd, no. 5088; Ṣaḥīḥ.

  • Consult a doctor – if the period abnormality persists, seek medical advice. The physical change may simply be due to stress.

b. Regarding the Oppressor

  • Advise them gently – If possible, advise them to fear Allah and repent. Remind them that claiming to cause harm through supernatural means is a form of shirk (if they claimed real power) or a lie.
  • Avoid further contact – The person who admits to torturing you is toxic. Protect yourself by cutting off all unnecessary interaction.
  • Seek help from authorities – If the oppression continues or involves threats, you may report to the police or a trusted elder. Islam permits taking lawful measures to stop oppression (Imdād al-Fatāwā, 4/326).
  • Do not retaliate – The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not oppress and do not be oppressed.” (Musnad Aḥmad, no. 5792). Retaliation with equal harm is permissible only within the bounds of justice (Qur’ān 42:40), but it is better to forgive if it brings peace to your heart.

c. If the Person Used Black Magic (Siḥr)

  • Always recite the Mu‘awwidhat (Sūrah al-Falaq and an-Nās) after every ṣalāh and before sleeping.
  • Recite Āyat al-Kursī after each farḍ ṣalāh – it is a protection from shayṭān and harm.
  • If you strongly suspect siḥr, you may seek the help of a trustworthy, pious scholar who performs ruqyah according to the Qur’an and Sunnah (avoid any who use unlawful methods).

4. Key Fatāwā from Ḥanafī Scholars

  • Fatāwā ‘Usmānī (by Muftī Taqī ‘Usmānī) states that causing psychological harm is a form of oppression, and the victim should seek justice from a Muslim ruler or judge if possible (2/456).
  • Imdād al-Fatāwā (by Mawlānā Ashraf ‘Alī Thānwī) rules that if someone uses ta‘wīdh (amulets) or practices that involve shirk, they must repent, and the victim should rely solely on Allāh’s protection (4/245).
  • Radd al-Muḥtār (by Ibn ‘Ābidīn) mentions that siḥr is a major sin, and the victim must seek refuge in Allāh and recite the verses of protection (6/396).

5. Practical Du‘ā’ to Recite

"Allāhumma innī a‘ūdhu bika min al-hammi wa al-ḥazani, wa a‘ūdhu bika min al-‘ajzi wa al-kasali, wa a‘ūdhu bika min al-jubni wa al-bukhli, wa a‘ūdhu bika min ghalabati ad-dayni wa qahri ar-rijāl."
(O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, and I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.) – Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, no. 2893.

Conclusion

  • Do not fear the claim – No human, regardless of their claims, has independent power to control your body except by the permission of Allāh. If the period stopped due to stress, it will likely return when the stress is removed.
  • Repent and forgive – If you are able, forgive the person for your own peace, but do not let them continue harming you. Take practical steps to protect yourself physically and spiritually.
  • Trust in Allāh – He is the ultimate Protector. The Qur’ān says: “And whoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him.” (Sūrah aṭ-Ṭalāq 65:3)

May Allāh remove your distress, restore your health, and grant you patience and relief. Āmīn.
