Question

We are now in Mina. In our tent can we perform Jumma Salah.

Answer

Answer:

During Hajj, pilgrims staying in Mina are considered travelers (musāfirūn). The Friday (Jumuʿah) prayer is not obligatory upon travelers; instead, they pray Ẓuhr (shortened to two rakʿāt). The Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is clear: he did not perform Jumuʿah while in Mina during his Hajj, even when the day of ʿArafah fell on a Friday. He prayed Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr combined and shortened.

Ruling on performing Jumuʿah in a tent:

  • The majority of contemporary Salafi scholars, including Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Bāz and Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn, hold that if a traveler prays Jumuʿah with a congregation, his prayer is valid and sufficient for Ẓuhr. However, it is not recommended to deliberately establish a separate Jumuʿah in a tent during Hajj, as it contradicts the prophetic practice.

  • Shaykh Ibn Bāz (Majmūʿ Fatāwā 12/186): “The traveler is not obligated to pray Jumuʿah. If he prays with the congregation, his prayer is valid and suffices him from Ẓuhr.”

  • Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (Fatāwā Nūr ʿalā al-Darb, tape 387): “If a traveler prays Jumuʿah, it is correct and he does not have to pray Ẓuhr afterward. But the better practice is to follow the Sunnah – pray Ẓuhr shortened.”

  • Shaykh al-Albānī and some other scholars considered Jumuʿah invalid for a traveler because the conditions of residence are not met. However, the view of Ibn Bāz and Ibn ʿUthaymīn is more prevalent and practical, especially for pilgrims who wish to pray with a large gathering.

Practical advice for your situation:

  • If you pray Ẓuhr in your tent (two rakʿāt, without Jumuʿah), you are following the Sunnah of the Prophet during Hajj. This is the best and safest course.
  • If you insist on performing Jumuʿah, it is permissible provided you have a valid congregation (at least two men, including the imam) and you deliver the Friday khuṭbah. The tent itself is a suitable place – cleanliness and direction (qiblah) are the only requirements.
  • Do not split the congregation unnecessarily; if there is a larger Jumuʿah gathering nearby (e.g., in a mosque or open area), it is better to join them rather than form a separate one in your tent.

Conclusion:

Yes, you can perform Jumuʿah in your tent, and it will be valid according to the majority of scholars (Ibn Bāz, Ibn ʿUthaymīn, and others). However, it is not the Sunnah during Hajj. The preferred practice is to pray Ẓuhr (shortened) as the Prophet did.
