Soil for tayammum
Taharah Purity · Hanbali
Question
Answer
Answer: What Kind of Soil is Suitable for Tayammum?
In the Hanbali school and according to the majority of scholars, any pure substance that comes from the earth (al-ášŖaĘŋÄĢd) is suitable for tayammum, provided it is clean (ášÄhir) and not mixed with impurities. This includes:
- Dust (soil)
- Sand
- Stones (including pebbles)
- Clay
- Lime (gypsum) that is earth-based
- Any natural mineral dust that rises from the ground
The evidence is the Qurâan (SÅĢrat al-MÄâidah 5:6):
ââĻ and if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth (ášŖaĘŋÄĢdan ášayyiban) and wipe over your faces and hands with it.â
The Prophet īˇē said:
âThe earth has been made for me a place of prostration and a means of purification.â (ášĸaá¸ĨÄĢá¸Ĩ al-BukhÄrÄĢ 335, Muslim 521)
Scholars comment:
- Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim said: âAny substance that rises from the earth and is called âearthâ (ášŖaĘŋÄĢd) suffices, whether it is dust, sand, stone, or clay.â (MajmÅĢĘŋ al-FatÄwÄ 21/340)
- Shaykh Ibn BÄz stated: âTayammum is valid with pure earth, whether it is soil, sand, or stone, as long as it is not najis (impure).â (FatÄwÄ NÅĢr ĘŋalÄ al-Darb)
- Shaykh al-AlbÄnÄĢ emphasized that the term ášŖaĘŋÄĢd in the Qurâan includes all that is on the surface of the earth, not just dust. (Silsilat al-Aá¸ĨÄdÄĢth al-ášĸaá¸ĨÄĢá¸Ĩa 1/118)
- Shaykh Ibn ĘŋUthaymÄĢn said: âIf a person cannot find dust, he may use sand, small stones, or even a rock, provided he intends tayammum.â (Al-Shará¸Ĩ al-MumtiĘŋ 1/383)
- Shaykh ášĸÄliá¸Ĩ al-FawzÄn affirmed: âThe correct view is that tayammum is valid with any pure substance from the earth, including dust, sand, and stones.â (Al-MulakhkhaášŖ al-FiqhÄĢ 1/313)
Conditions for validity:
- The soil must be pure (ášÄhir) â free from najÄsah (impurity).
- It must be earth-based â not artificial, metal, glass, or wooden surfaces.
- It must be dry or slightly damp â if it is wet with pure water, it is still valid as long as it is still earth-like.
Important note: Tayammum is not valid with things that are not from the earth, such as carpets, wood, plastic, asphalt, or anything that is not originally earth. Also, if the soil is mixed with something impure (e.g., urine or blood), it cannot be used.
Practical ruling: When performing tayammum, one should strike the earth with both hands and then wipe the face and hands. If only a clean stone or wall is available, the same method applies (one strike suffices, based on the á¸ĨadÄĢth of ĘŋAmmÄr ibn YÄsir).
Conclusion: Any clean, natural earth â soil, sand, gravel, stone, or clay â suffices for tayammum. The key is that it be min al-ášŖaĘŋÄĢd (from the earth) and ášayyib (pure).
