Question

Answer

Answer (English)

Wa ‘Alaykum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

In the Hanafi school, the condition for a woman’s dress in ṣalāh is that it must cover the entire body (except face, hands up to wrists, and feet – though there are details about feet) with a cloth that is not transparent. The garment must be thick enough that the colour of the skin (or the hair) is not visible at all.

Key Ruling

Imam Ibn ‘Abidin (d. 1252 AH) writes in Radd al-Muhtar:

ويشترط في ثوب المرأة أن لا يصف لون بشرتها
“It is a condition for a woman’s garment that it does not show the colour of her skin.” (Radd al-Muhtar, 1/406, chapter on conditions of prayer)

Similarly, Mufti Muhammad Shafi‘ (d. 1976) states in Imdad al-Fatawa:

“For a woman, it is necessary in ṣalāh to wear a cloth through which the colour of the body is not apparent. If the cloth is thin and the skin colour can be seen, the ṣalāh will not be valid.”

Thus, the criterion is not merely whether the hand or neck is “clearly visible”, but whether the skin colour (or hair colour) can be distinguished when looking at the garment.

Your Situation

You mentioned: “হিজাব কিছুটা পাতলা হলে, হাত বা গলা খুব বেশি না হলেও কিছুটা আবছা বুঝা গেলে” (if the hijab is slightly thin, and even though the hand or neck is not very clear, a hazy/blurred appearance of the skin is perceived).

  • If the hijab was so thin that the colour of the skin (or hair) was recognizable – even faintly or hazily – then the ṣalāh was not valid.
  • However, if the hijab was thick enough that the skin colour could not be distinguished at all, and only the outline of the body was visible (like a loose sheet), the ṣalāh is valid.

In Hanafi fiqh, “seeing the skin colour” invalidates the covering; mere perception of the body’s shape under a thick cloth is not harmful.

Past Salats

If you now realize that the hijab you wore showed the skin colour (even a little), then all those ṣalāhs must be repeated (qada).

قال في الفتاوى الهندية: إن صلت المرأة بثوب رقيق يرى منه لون بشرتها لا تجوز صلاتها
“It is stated in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya: If a woman prays in a thin garment through which the colour of her skin is seen, her ṣalāh is not valid.” (al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 1/58)

But if you were unaware of this ruling and the transparency was such that a normal person would not consider it revealing, then you may have an excuse. The safer course is to make up the obligatory prayers (fardh) of the period when you are certain the covering was insufficient. For supererogatory (nafl) prayers, no qada is required.

Practical Advice

  1. Test your hijab: Place it against your hand or arm in bright light. If you can see the colour of your skin (or hairline) through it, it is not valid for ṣalāh.
  2. Wear an opaque undercap (khimar) and a thick outer scarf or cloak (jilbab).
  3. When in doubt, use a thicker layer or two garments (e.g., a neck-covering underscarf and an outer hijab).

Conclusion

  • If the hijab showed the skin colour even faintly → ṣalāh invalid, past prayers must be repeated.
  • If the hijab only showed a hazy outline but not the skin colour → ṣalāh valid, no need to repeat.

May Allah accept your sincerity and grant you ease.

والله أعلم (And Allah knows best).
