Answer
The question of whether three talaqs pronounced in one sitting count as one or three is a matter of scholarly difference. According to the stronger evidence adopted by Salafi scholars, and as confirmed on IslamQA.info, pronouncing three divorces at once counts as only one revocable talaq.
Evidence:
-
Hadith of Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him):
"Divorce was (counted as) one during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the time of Abu Bakr, and the first two years of ‘Umar’s caliphate."
(Sahih Muslim, 1472; Abu Dawud, 2193) -
Hadith of Rukānah ibn ‘Abd Yazīd:
He divorced his wife with a single pronouncement of three talaqs, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that it was only one divorce.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, 2196 – authenticated by al-Albāni and others) -
Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim held that this is the correct view, and it has been adopted by many later scholars, including Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Bāz and Shaykh Muhammad ibn Sālih al-‘Uthaymīn.
Conclusion:
Based on the authentic Sunnah, three talaqs uttered in one session or in one phrase are counted as a single, revocable divorce. The husband may take his wife back during her ‘iddah unless he has finalized the divorce with the third revocation.
